Islamic State, Caliphate, Khilafah: Sharia Hippies

When Allah first brought me out of the wilderness into knowing Him, I praised Him greatly for His Guidance, Grace and Goodness to me. I now praise Him abundantly again for His Favour upon me and protecting me from many dangerous situations and influences.

Among the Muslims, I believe I am probably the proselyte of all ages. I have been courted by every cult, wayward group and even some among Muslim Orthodoxy with one way goggles; but as ever Allah has kept me focused on the fundamentals and to have wide vision.

The Islamic State, khilafah or caliphate groups have such a history with me. All of them inviting me to the “pure Islam,” the Islam that is “on the way of our pious predecessors” and the true faith that “is the answer for all society’s ills” and that if it was implemented “would bring world peace, an end to poverty, crime, water bills, gas and electricity shortages and every other ailment to strike mankind!”

“Islam is the answer!” I would hear the chanting and braying of the donkeys. “Our constitution is the Qur’an! Our by-laws are the Sunnah! Our Parliament is the Shura!!” All of these groups claim that they have the answer to all of the ills facing the human race in general but also of the 1.5 billion Muslims of Muslim Orthodoxy in particular (such modesty is bound to attract converts).

But let’s look at all of these groups.

First consider the cults: Hizb ut-Tahrir (Mu`tazilah theology), Salafiyyah (all of its’ pernicious offshoots), Shi`ah, Bahai, Ahmadiyyah and so many more.

Then we have the wayward and pre-occupied Sunni groups that are one trick ponies: Dawat e  Islami, Jamat e Tabligh, Al-Murabitun, Jamat Ahle Sunnat, some of Dar ul-Uloom Deoband, Jamat i Islami, Ikhwan ul-Muslimin, FIS.

What do they all have in common? They are all miserable failures. The very reasons that they claim to have been founded have not been met and they have been around for at least 20 years. The most it took for the Muslims to establish the government and khilafah in the earth was four years. This was after the Great Catastrophe from 656-670 AH (AD 1258-1262).

None of these groups have met the requirement, none of them have lifted the banner and been established in the Earth at any time and they will not. Why?

Allah is not with them. In fact, Allah brought armies of unbelievers against them to chasten them and show them that He has judged them and is not with them. Look at the 1948,1956,1958,1967,1973 wars between the Arab countries and Israel.

Were not the Ikhwan involved in these wars and advising that “Islam was the constitution?” Yes. But they failed miserably and so far Israel is 7-0 if you count the Lebanese incursions along with the major wars mentioned above. And the Israelis are going to keep winning against these groups, no matter how strong they get.

FIS, the Ikhwan and their related groups have come into power Egypt and North Africa and been resoundingly spanked

(Particularly Morsi after he took out a several billion pound loan from the IMF that included plenty of interest and the army, upon his overthrow, gave back and instead took out an open principle loan from the Arab Gulf to be paid back through tourism and other revenues. The army are supposed to be “kuffar” and “secularist,” but they got out of the interest while As-Sisi remains clean shaven.

Yet the man with peach fuzz gets you further into debt, has no plan for running a government and focuses on people making Adhan in the parliament to summon people to the prayer – what on Earth are you doing in the Parliament when you said in the early 1990s that just entering it is an act of major shirk? – and other fantastic plenary issues).

The reason is that Allah is not with them. Look at the wayward Sunni one trick pony groups. They are equally abysmal and in fact probably more so than the cults because they are supposed to represent the true faith.

Much crowing has been made about the “Islamic State,” something that none of the above can define except that it’s a place with people that have no appendages left due to theft, no women as they’ve all been stoned to death and apparently no revenue because everything is going to be free and profit forbidden.

I was first exposed to the “rally for khilafah” and “Islamic State” jargon in the 1990s by committed people who I could at best refer to as “Sharia hippies.” This title is being used due to the fact that these people have put their families, lives and all other worldly obligations on hold to pursue the ideal where there shall be no charges for utilities,

(even though the Companion `Uthman ibn `Affan, may Allah be pleased with him, had a well and with the permission of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, charged people for permission to use the service)

land,

(even though there is a kharaj tax and Zakat ul-Fitr for land under many instances)

Or even food.

(which is bizarre as there were markets in the time of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and they were buying and selling in something)

A careful reading of these hippies revealed that they are no different to communists and Marxists. In fact, much of the language has been borrowed and Islamicised. Take a careful look at the Islamic State.

Where is the evidence of the “State?” Where is the evidence that all power in Islam rests in a central government powered by one individual put into power by like minded groups? This is the very definition of a head of state.

The Muslims in the know are the proletariat and those not privileged are “unreached.” I took note of this rhetoric when I listened to Muslims describe how they are “upon the da`awah,” or they are “HT positive” or they were “going on jamat” or they were “in the cause of Allah.”

When I stood unprepared to join anyone, myself being happy belonging to the main body of the Muslims and Muslim Orthodoxy, I was made to understand that I was not really dedicated to Islam.

One such occurrence brought the matter into full relief for me. It was Ramadan. The Ramadan wars had begun. When did you start Ramadan? When are you doing `Eid? The standard pleasantries some Muslims engage in outside of masjids rather than the state of their families.

“You see, if we had a khalif! If we had a khalif, there would be one Ramadan or one `Eid. This is how it was under a khalif!” An impassioned and animated bespeckled chemistry student evangelised, giving his personal testimony to all who would listen to the gospel.

“The Earth must have been quite different back then. Were the time zones inverted or shortened during the khilafah,” I offered when he turned to me and asked my opinion. A few chuckles from the audience but a dead pan stare from the preacher. I was messing around, breaking the flow.

So he did what any preacher would do. He ignored me, turned his back to me and continued his mission, an arrogant and brazen dismissal.

No matter how many examples I gave, both in the time of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and after of there being different `Eids due to geography and other laws surrounding chronology, our HT positive avenger was just not content.

The same thing was the case with Hizb ut-Tahrir, which as an organisation takes secret oaths – as outlined in Al-Qanun al-Idari – and positions itself as the sole source of khilafah.  Hizb ut-Tahrir says of itself:

“Its’ purpose was to revive the Islamic Ummah from the severe decline that it had reached, and to liberate it from the thoughts, systems and laws of kufr, as well as the laws and domination of the kufr states.” [1]

The sect continues:

“A number of attempts and movements, Islamic as well as un-Islamic, arose in order to revive the Muslims, but all of them failed. They could neither revive the Muslims, nor stop their severe decline…” [2]

Finally, they declare that everyone must follow them.

“Therefore, Hizb ut-Tahrir was established and its’ formation was based on the Islamic `aqeedah. It adopted those concepts and rules of Islam that are required to implement its’ aim.

It has avoided the shortcomings and the causes that have led to the failure of movements that were established to revive Muslims by Islam…It therefore deserves that the Ummah embraces it and proceeds with it; in fact the Ummah must embrace it because it is the only party that digests the idea…” [3]

After having been established since the year 1371 AH (AD 1953) by a false mujtahid, they have failed miserably and established nothing. Why? Allah is not with them and they have no authority. They never will have authority and everywhere they have raised their heads, they have been pulled out by the roots and been uprooted and overrun. They have won not one war or even a battle. They are thus failures.

This group is no less in kufr than the “kufr states” they speak of as they, as well as “Islamic State” hawks, calling for the same big government centred, one man, one vote philosophy of the communists and others. The only difference is they want their own dictatorship.

If you think this might be overgeneralising, I ask the reader to obtain the two seminal texts Das Kapital and the Communist Manifesto, read it alongside of Hizb ut-Tahrir, Ikhwan, FIS, Jamati, Tablighi, Dawati and other literature and see if the same paternalistic, overweening autocracy is not present.

I am not suggesting that these groups all co-conspired and read this literature and plotted; but what I am saying is that when men come together with earthly, fleshly concepts rooted in fantastic tales of “milk and honey” past that never occurred, this is what they will produce.

As for the Ahmadiyyah, Mirza Tahir Ahmad showed his ignorance when denying the leadership of prophets and inserting a spiritual paedophile into the chain of leaders of humanity:

“Thereafter, he migrated in search of the lost sheep of the Children of Israel as he himself had promised. By following the probable route of the migration of Israeli tribes one can safely assume that he must have travelled through Afghanistan on his way to Kashmir and other parts of India where the presence of Israeli tribes was reported.

There is strong historical evidence that the peoples of both Afghanistan and Kashmir have stemmed from migrant Jewish tribes. Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad revealed that Jesus ultimately died and was buried in Srinagar, Kashmir.” [4]

Mr Ahmad rightly recognised that in order for there to be any leadership in Islam, one needs leadership. So his organisation formed a false khilafah and leadership structure. The result. No power, no might, no strength. Nothing. Allah is not with them. The same can be said of the Bahais.

The same thing holds true for all of these groups and time wasters mentioned above. The sad thing is that rather than mind their own business and focus on fading into oblivion, they desire to take other people with them on their madness. The sad thing is that both they and future followers and devotees will be disappointed.

Figure 2A: Sharia hippies at a rally. Notice the conspicuous khilafah poster rantings in the background.

Figure 2A: Sharia hippies at a rally. Notice the conspicuous khilafah poster rantings in the background.

The “sharia hippies” will come down from their high, realise how much time has passed them by, that they have children out of control and a wrecked marriage, that their level of knowledge was the same as when they joined the group and that they still have done nothing.

Figure 2B: Another set of hippies. Let the reader ask him or himself where most of the people in this picture are today. Most likely in the exact same place in life as sharia hippies: complete and utter failure.

Figure 2B: Another set of hippies. Let the reader ask him or herself where most of the people in this picture are today. Most likely in the exact same place in life as sharia hippies: complete and utter failure.

Now picture this…

There is a clerical class of people in this Ummah who are responsible for all matters, spiritual and temporal. They gave their ruling on the matter the day the khilafah issue raised its’ head. They also addressed the Muslims on what they should be doing. These were the leaders of the entire Muslim world in their time.

They are the heads of the Ummah, the heads of the madhhabs in their time and they show no fear. These men in the recent past were fearless and gave the final word on the subject.

If they are wrong, then the madhhabs are wrong, then the scholars that catalogued and explained them are wrong, the scholars that gave them authority are wrong, the tabi`in were wrong to make taqlid to their Imams,

the tabi`in before were wrong to make taqlid of the Companions, the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, chose no clerical class and left no successors and thus Islam died with him and is therefore false.

If this is not the case…then there were a clerical class of people put in charge of the Ummah, successors were chosen, Islam was safeguarded, authorities were and are chosen in every age and they have spoken rightly.

The PDF included at the bottom is therefore the final word on the matter and should be distributed in the Anglosphere as widely as possible so that the Muslims in this part of the world might understand the direction of history and what trajectory they should take.

Allah has all success and I hope to continue to strive with all that is special and precious in support of the truth and following His Way and making taqlid of His Representatives who are the Inheritors of the Prophets.

Was-Salaam,

Al-Hajj Abu Ja`far al-Hanbali

  1. Salaam ‘aleikum Shaykh. Did anyone throughout history ever say that ‘Isa ‘alayhis salaam travelled to the afg/kashmir part of the world? Where did the Qadiyanis get this from?

  2. You write: “I ask the reader to obtain the two seminal texts Das Kapital and the Communist Manifesto, read it alongside of Hizb ut-Tahrir, Ikhwan, FIS, Jamati, Tablighi, Dawati and other literature and see if the same paternalistic, overweening autocracy is not present.”

The tablighi “curriculum” consists of fazail-i amal and hayatus sahabah, two books that carry no resemblance to Das Kapital and the Communist Manifesto. The first one is purely on the merits of good deeds and the latter is about the lives of the Prophet’s companions, may Allah be pleased with them.

Tablighi jama‘at maintains a non-affiliating stature in matters of politics and are therefore reviled by so-called Caliphate groups. I think the same is true for dawat-i Islami.

  3. salam alaikum,

Do you have any comments on the following : http://eng.dar-alifta.org/foreign/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=574&CategoryID=5

I feel there is still grey areas to be addressed between :

    – there being no such clearly defined entity of “Islamic state”
    – and that not all states fit the criteria of Islam to be called a legit khalifah (like the Turkish National assembly with a namesake caliph being a invalid innovation as mentioned in the fatwa you translated).

    1) Is there a ruling state or authority that islam considers as valid even though not a khilafah ?

    2) how much of the institution of khalifah is subject to change and what aspect of it is fixed (for example if the obligation on the khalif have been decentralized into institutional bodies, is that a valid change ? We know the first four caliph were mijtahids by their own right but not the case with those that came later and thereby decentralization took place already).

    3) where exactly does the current Muslim countries fall under and what is the obligation of Muslims with regards to it.
